It was never easy, and the high water table made construction difficult and often perilous. Immediately below the major Merritt Island traffic arteries engineers planned and constructed a network of subway tunnels.

In the late 1980’s the subway authority contracted to remove all asbestos and asbestos-related products and equipment from the system. There are no reports of Mesothelioma among employees of this era. The subway authority continues to provide a safe work environment for employees.
